Filipinos, especially the younger generation, who missed the 1986 People Power “Velvet Revolution” that toppled the Marcos dictatorship in the Philippines and catapulted legendary Cory Aquino to the presidency, have their chance to relive the moment by joining the People Power Festival at 2 PM on Sunday, February 28, 2010, at the famous high-tech Historic Fifth Street School Auditorium, not far from Golden Nugget Casino in downtown, on Vegas and Clark, organized by the Las Vegas Chapter of the US Pinoys for Noy-Mar, which has chapters across the USA, from California to New York.
The first 200 registrants at the People Power Festival will receive a free raffle ticket and a chance to win a computer in the draw that afternoon. There will be a second raffle for larger prizes like a free round trip to Manila, and a dozen of other prizes, etc., for $10 each ticket. Attendees are requested to wear something yellow, the color trademark of Cory’s People Power. Alcoholic beverages are now allowed in the Festival and Security Guards will implement this City ordinance.
The celebration will feature “Gotohan ni Noy at Mar sa Las Vegas,” where goto, tokwa’t baboy and other Filipino snacks will be available for sale. Yellow T-shirts, yellow ribbons and lapel pins will also sold. There will be a Ninoy-Cory-Noynoy video showing, together with entertainments, featuring the famous Leonardo, singer and comedian, rising star Wynn Casino- famed singer Sam Mendoza, grand-daughter of Ninoy Aquino, physician pianist, Dr. Vic Bonuel, and others.
There will be no admission charge but the US Pinoys for Noy-Mar requests people to go to www.FUN8888. com and donate thru PayPal any amount by clicking the orange Donate button, for the fund raising among Filipinos for Noynoy and Mar. This good governance movement is also inviting volunteers to join this noble cause, for a greater Philippines, by calling Luz Micabalo at 702-360-4148, Joy Salas at 702-838-7418, or Farida Chua at 219-670-2482. Those interest to join the Youth Brigade are requested to call any of the numbers above.
Those Fil-Ams joining the Festival may, at their request, get a free H1N1 vaccination, and save $25 or more for the shot when obtained at a clinic or drug store. This is a special service provided for those Fil-Ams (only) attending the People Power Festival.
The whole world was watching when Asia’s icon of Democracy, Cory Aquino, the self-proclaimed “plain housewife” of assassinated Senator Benigno Aquino, Jr., arch-enemy of Marcos, led the bloodless People Revolution, which saw hundreds of thousands of Filipinos, armed only with their conviction and determination, braved the streets of Manila confronting tanks and the dictator’s military forces. Without firing a single bullet, the people, inspired and led by the “plain housewife” Cory, drove Ferdinand Marcos out of the country and restored democracy to the Philippines. The United States military jets were flying over Manila to protect Cory and her army of People Power brigade demonstrating on the streets, face to face with heavily armed tanks and soldiers of Marcos.
After Cory’s death on August 1, 2009, the people, this time saddened by the demise of their hero and protector, and angered by the blatant and massive corruption in the government, from Malacanang down to the barangay officials, clamored for the son of Cory, Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, to run for president at the May 10, 2010 national elections. Mar Roxas, who was originally a contender for the highest post, gave way to Noynoy, and instead, is running as Noynoy’s vice-president. Pampanga Governor Eddie Panlilio, who was also a presidential aspirant, likewise stepped aside and endorsed Noynoy. The good governance movements in the Philippines are supporting the Noynoy-Mar tandem and their entire line-up under the Liberal Party.
“The People Power Festival on February 28th symbolizes the continuation of the Filipinos’ historic struggle, this time against the rape and plunder of our nation, perpetrated by the crooks in our government, the amoral politicians we elected into office, who swore to protect the interest and welfare of the Filipinos and the Philippines,” stated Philip S. Chua, MD, Convenor of the Las Vegas Chapter of the US Pinoys for Noy-Mar.
Cory’s People Power had also inspired the clamor for freedom and democracy around the globe, and liberated countless millions of victims of oppression from Seoul to Johannesburg to Prague, to Warsaw and Moscow, and eventually led to the tearing down of the Berlin Wall.
“The Filipino People Power of 1986 is one of the proudest moments in the history of our nation, a significant contribution of the Filipinos to the world, in the fight for freedom and democracy in all oppressed nations around the globe ,” Dr. Chua noted.
The organizers of the event are inviting every Filipino to “please join us re-live that historic moment at the People Power Festival on Sunday, February 28th, to hasten The Winds of Change in our nation, and be a vigilant member of the good governance movements for a Greater Philippines, and leave a lasting legacy your children and grandchildren can cherish with pride in generations to come.”
