The GRP and MILF peace panels met in Kuala Lumpur today in a question and answer session that clarified many of the proposals of the MILF with respect to their draft agreement . The GRP panel was led by its chairman, Undersecretary Rafael Seguis accompanied by panel members DAR Secretary Nasser Pangandaman and Ronald Adamat. The MILF panel was led by its chief negotiator Mohagher Iqbal.
We are elated that the MILF respects the processes and steps the GRP needs to undertake towards achieving a long-term solution to the Mindanao problem.
The GRP panel is optimistic that we are on to a process that could potentially bridge the gaps between the positions of the GRP and the MILF on contentious issues in the peace negotiations. Some of these issues include concepts on governance and use of natural resources.
These issues are currently being discussed in reflective dialogues mounted by the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) in nine regions in Mindanao, Palawan, Bacolod, Metro Manila and Baguio.
We express our appreciation to Mediator Datuk Othman Abd Razak and the Malaysian government for facilitating the talks and look forward to our next meeting later this month where we hope to open discussions on possible mechanisms for developing consensus on a legislative agenda and possible Constitutional amendments for a just and lasting peace in Muslim Mindanao.
