OPAPP holds Ist roundtable dialogue with international mediators

MANILA, March 26 – The Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) will hold on
Saturday the first ever roundtable dialogue with international mediators to bring out “ ideas and “build
bridges” that could help hasten the peace process to a successful conclusion.

Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Annabelle T. Abaya said four foreign experts in mediating armed
conflicts will discuss with government peace panels negotiating with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front
(MILF) and Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front
(CPP/NPA/NDF), and two MILF representatives during a daylong roundtable dialogue at the Sofitel Plaza
Hotel in Pasay City.

Invited foreign speakers are Ambassador Lakhdar Brahimi, former Undersecretary-General of the United
Nations; Martin Griffiths, founding director of the Henry Thabo Mbeki; and Peruvian Ambassador Alvaro de
Soto, former UN special coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process.

Datuk Othman Bin Abd Razak, Malaysian facilitator; and David Gorman, an expert armed conflict mediator,
will also speak during the dialogue.

The roundtable dialogue will start with an overview of the peace process in the Philippines.  The
discussions will be in three parts exploring the qualities of a mediator; overcoming impasses, and
mediating identity-based conflicts.
