TimeOutNY TIME OUT NEW YORK CRITIC'S PICK
Inspired by Eurpides' Iphigenia in Tauris, this astute mélange - a splendid collaboration between debut playwright Michi Barall and veteran director Loy Arcenas - coalesces elements of song, dance and video into an inventive show that's part eccentric contemporary deconstruction, part scholarly symposium and part empowerment tale. David Greenspan's turn as Artemis is a highlight, but the whole eight-person ensemble nimbly balances focused playfulness with ironic detachment -Diane Snyder

This is your first show with Ma-Yi! What has been the best part about working with Ma-Yi? I was lucky enough to work on another of Michi's plays for the Ma-Yi reading series last Fall, and that was when I discovered their amazing writer's lab. They've made a commitment to fully producing the works developed in the lab. It seems like a lot of great plays in the city get multiple readings, and then sometimes get workshopped to death, and it is nice to see a company committed to trusting writers and producing them.
You have been involved in many great off-Broadway productions here in NY. What's good about being an actor in NYC? It sounds like a canned response, but getting to work with such a wide variety of people. I've been lucky enough to get to work with some of my favorite writers and actors and directors. It is definitely one of the perks. Also, as a unemployed actor, you get a free pair of shoes every year. That's pretty good too. Weird, but good.
Have you enjoyed having a "shirtless" scene in RESCUE ME? Audiences certainly have! I will only do shows where I appear topless. I feel like my best work, in the theater and in life, has been while topless. I'm pretty sure they are developing a piece in the Ma-Yi lab about me being topless. They'll still probably make me audition for it.
What do you like to do outside of theatre? I like to love on and walk and snuggle my dog. He's amazing. I spend an unnecessary amount of time going to concerts, which I think is a habit I formed in college when I worked for a college radio station. I write a lot. Go to museums. All of the cliche stuff you do in New York. In the past few weeks, my newest hobby has been to study Paco Tolson.
Besides the snacks, why would you recommend this show to a friend? We've recently noticed that the classics scholars have been consistently cute. It never hurts to be around a cute classics scholar.
Come see Ryan in... ___________________________________
