SIMBUYO FESTIVAL 2010

Simbuyo is a celebration of the Philippines’ rich culture and heritage on the occasion of the commemoration of the country’s independence. Literally an outburst of emotion, Simbuyo is symbolized by a flame in the tri- colors of the Philippine flag, the fire that burns eternally from a clay pot on which is inscribed the phrase “Mabuhay Pilipinas” in pre-colonial syllabary baybayin .
This desire to keep Philippine heritage alive is the passion that draws together volunteer talents from the Greater Metro DC Area and the Philippine American Foundation for Charities, Inc. to offer their talents in a showcase of Philippine performing arts traditions as well as of performances of classical and modern forms that bear the distinct Filipino aesthetic sensibility.
This year’s theme, “Kasarinlan, Kamalayan at Kasuotan” will feature folk dances, popular songs, traditional kundimans and, among others, a dance interpretation of National Hero Jose Rizal's Mi Ultimo Adios by award-winning Jason Ignacio, all set against a review of colorful costumes and fabrics by noted Filipino designer Alfonso “Boy” Guinoo.
