Philippine Embassy Promotes Philippine Orchids through Art Works of Professor Edwin
Cuenco, MFA

Arkansas-based Professor Edwin Cuenco, MFA shows a photo of Walingwaling, dubbed the “Queen of
Philippine Orchids” to Philippine Ambassador to the United States Willy C. Gaa during the opening reception for
“Orkidyas: In Celebration of Philippine Flora” held at the Embassy of the Philippines on July 16, 2010.
Walingwaling or Vanda Sanderiana was originally found only in Davao, Cotabato and Zamboanga del Sur in
Southern Philippines. It is also said to be the single most important parent in breeding among the vandaceous
species.

Orkidyas is a digital print and photo exhibition of Professor Edwin Cuenco, a Fine Arts graduate of the Philippine
Women’s University in Manila. Professor Cuenco completed his Master of Fine Arts at the George Washington
University and is now teaching Art at Arkansas Tech University.

His graphic designs and digital illustrations have received ADDY Gold, Silver and Bronze juried recognitions
from the American Advertising Federation in Texas, Virginia and Arkansas including Best of Show at the 12th
National Computer Arts Juried Exhibition that was included in the U.S. Department of State’s traveling exhibition.

Recipient of the University of Texas Outstanding Faculty Award in Teaching and Service, he was awarded the
2010 Educator of the Year Award from the Arkansas Advertising Federation in Little Rock, Arkansas. His works
are found in public and private collections including the World Bank, George Washington University and
University of Texas.

In his remarks, Ambassador Gaa expressed his gratitude to Professor Cuenco, “for using his art to inspire us
all to appreciate the earth’s natural wonders and to remind us of our responsibility to its care.” George
Washington University Chief Curator Lenore Miller and art and orchid enthusiasts in Washington, DC attended
the opening reception.

The exhibit, presented in collaboration with the Philippine Women’s University Alumni Charities, Inc. and the
Philippine Orchid Society, will run until July 30, 2010 at the Carlos P. Romulo Hall of the Embassy of the
Philippines. -- END
