MHC’s “Kainan, Sayawan, Tennis, Basketball at Iba Pa PICNIC” - A
relaxing day that was  worth it...

Metro Washington D.C.: Many MHC supporters, families and guests gathered on Labor Day
weekend to enjoy the warm remnants of summer at Arlington’s Marcey Park (part of the
Potomac Overlook Regional Park).   Several families particularly the early birds feasted on the
sumptuous lechon, courtesy of Northstar/Golden Dragon’s Merly Eda, and various delectable
dishes by MHC and its volunteers, some of them were Rose Narses, Melanie Barroba,  Howard
Ebenstein, Neng Poliquit,  Tess Stoddard, Anabel Mariano, Bebot & Gwen Fernandez.

Former Philippine Ambassador to the United Nations in New York, H.E. Ambassador Lauro Baja
graced the occasion with his charming wife Norma. Fil-Am Image President Nonoy Mendoza was
also accompanied by his equally amiable wife Aida and daughters Rochelle and Rhonda.  Consul
Rico Fos, new Cultural Affairs Head of the Embassy,  came with his family. Atty. Loy Cortel,
Attache’/ Consular Officer of the Embassy, arrived later in the afternoon and joined the group’s
line dancing.

Also spotted at the picnic were Mission of Mercy’s Henry & Mary Balagtas, FYP’s Victor Ecarma
and Joni Samilin, FILAM St. Michael’s Tony & Denia Calaro,  Jojo Franco, PACP’s Ding & Remy
Cabrera, PACC’s John Phil Cabrera, PAFC’s Danny Orino, PG County Government’s Beth Wong,

Fr. PJ Camiring led the thank you prayers for the volunteers/friends of MHC, its beneficiaries and
all the attendees. Junior Cabrera and his team from Mark Cabrera & Associates conducted raffle
draws every hour and gave away gift certificates to the lucky winners. Among them were
FilCom Blessed Sacrament’s Lucy Sanchez and Fil-Am St. Michael’s Ednora Franco.

Adding excitement to that fine day were the melodious voices of  Hannah Cabrera Johnson, Jun
Herradurra and Rochelle Mendoza who belted out their respective favorite tunes in English,
Tagalog and Ilocano.

Serge & Cory Doverte’s BOGWAS young adults’  basketball team brought by Gerry Parnecio
played with master players like  Ron Stoddard, Roger Cabanban and Kit Vicente  and other
teenagers Alex Valera, Ritchie Dengah, Raymund Jaramillo, Monico Bustamante  etc., practically
blazed the court with their lay-up shots. MHC’s Atty. Arnedo Valera, Jesse Gatchalian and Fr. PJ
Camiring, catching up with the teener’s brisk running,  impressed the mixed adult and young
crowd with their long shots and rebound.

A top Fil-Am tennis player, Lina San Miguel of Taytay Ass’n of America (TAA), gave free tennis
lessons to the children and adults alike. While athletes engaged themselves in sports, line
dancers’ enthusiasts led by former Cultural Officer/ Attaché Grace Valera and MHC’s Julie
Quitoriano with  Be & Mario Pagalunan  chose to dance to JR Aquino’s vibrant line-dance music.
The rest simply relaxed in their picnic mats on the grass with friends and families watching the
festivities from the graceful slopes of Marcey Park. The park’s amphitheater-like terrain
provided  a perfect view of the happenings within the picnic grounds.  For everyone, it was a
relaxing day that was worth it !

“I wanted to thank you for including me and my family in your Labor Day celebration.  My family and I had a
wonderful time. The food was delicious and we also had the pleasure to meet many of the individuals in the
community. I look forward to attending more events with the Migrant Heritage Community.  Thank you for the
opportunity.”
