The Migrant Heritage Commission (MHC) condemns in the strongest possible terms the racially insensitive remarks made by actress Teri Hatcher in the ABC prime time television series "Desperate Housewives".
In the said television episode, Susan (Teri Hatcher) commented after being diagnosed by her gynecologist that she is nearing menopause and said, "Can I check those diplomas because I just wanted to make sure that they are not from some med school in the Philippines." We take pride to the significant contributions of our Filipino Health Care Workers especially our doctors , nurses and other health care professionals whom are now considered strong pillars of the US Health Care System . They are committed and dedicated healthcare professionals who possess not only excellent academic background, but the much needed experience to care for their patients. The US Health Care System has a solid foundation because our Health Care professionals are considered the backbone of many major healthcare facilities throughout the United States.
The producer and writer(s) of this particular episode have obviously shown their complete ignorance of the competence of Filipino Migrant Health Care Professionals . This type of derogatory remark is not only insensitive, but outrageous and an affront to the cultural identity and rights of Filipino Migrants in the United States . This is in no way contributes to racial harmony and diversity of this country . The United States is a nation of immigrants and a collage of various ethnic nationalities. The strength of this country, as expressed by the former chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, Alan Greenspan in his book "The Age of Turbulence" rest on "opening our borders to the world's skilled workforce...and must be high on the policy of our agenda". The Filipino Health Care professionals especially our doctors and nurses are integral parts of the world's skilled workforce.
The Migrant Heritage Commission (MHC) through its program thrusts recognizes, promotes and protects the cultural identity and rights of Filipino Migrants in the United States consistent with the UN Migrant Workers Convention and other related International Human Rights instruments.
ABC Network, the producers and writers of the television show "Desperate Housewives" should apologize to the Fil-Am community and to the Filipino Nation as a whole.
