Statement by Greg Macabenta, NaFFAA National Chair, on the Appointment of Gen. Shenseki as Secretary of Veterans Affairs
|
We take special pride in the selection of Gen. Eric Shenseki as Veterans Affairs Secretary. We agree wholeheartedly with President-elect Obama when he said that Gen. Shenseki “is exactly the right person who is going to be able to make sure that we honor our troops when they come home.” So many of our veterans today are struggling to heal their wounds and rebuild their lives. And there are many still, including veterans of World War II, who fought nobly and bravely in the nation’s war effort, They have been waiting for a very long time to have their honor and dignity restored.
Over the years, Asian Pacific Americans have been serving with distinction in the U.S. military, risking their lives in defense of freedom and democracy and making remarkable contributions to U.S. society. They continue to defend the country today at great sacrifice, upholding the proud traditions of patriotism and love of country.
Gen. Shensiki brings to this important position our most cherished values of courage, integrity and semse to duty. His appointment is a recognition not only of our achievements as Asian Pacific Americans. It is also an inspiring affirmation of President-elect Obama’s conviction that among America’s best and brightest are men and women of diverse cultural experiences and backgrounds.
We congratulate Gen. Shenseki and wish him well as he prepares to undertake yet another important mission for our country.
